Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are expected to appear before a federal court in New York to face drug-trafficking-related charges.
The couple was reportedly arrested in Venezuela on Saturday by U.S. forces acting on orders from President Donald Trump. They were taken into U.S. custody and have remained there pending their court appearance.
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said prosecutors are confident in their case, stating that the team is “completely comfortable with this prosecution.”
Their court appearance comes just two days after their arrest, marking a major international legal development involving the former Venezuelan leader and his wife. The case underscores ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to hold foreign officials accountable for alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
