The Nigerian Senate has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South East Senatorial District. His passing was confirmed by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, who disclosed to AIT that the lawmaker died after battling cancer.
Until his death, Mpigi served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works in the 10th Senate. He had reportedly been ill for several months, a condition that kept him away from legislative duties prior to his passing.
His death marks another loss for the upper chamber at a time when lawmakers are navigating key legislative and political transitions. Mpigi was regarded as an influential voice from Rivers State and maintained close political ties with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Mpigi recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, a move that reflected shifting political alliances within Rivers State and the broader national landscape. His defection was seen as significant given his alignment with Wike, a prominent political figure in the state.
A two term senator, Mpigi served in both the 9th and 10th Senates. Before his elevation to the upper chamber, he was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2011, marking the beginning of more than a decade of service in the National Assembly.
Throughout his tenure, he played a role in legislative oversight and infrastructure related matters, particularly in his capacity as chairman of the Works Committee. His absence in recent months had fueled quiet concerns about his health among colleagues.
In the early stages of his illness, Mpigi stepped back from active participation in Senate proceedings. While official details about his condition were limited, sources within the chamber had indicated that he was receiving medical attention.
His death now leaves a vacant seat in Rivers South East, triggering constitutional procedures for representation and potential political recalibration in the district.
As tributes begin to emerge from colleagues and political associates, attention will turn to the implications for Rivers State politics and the balance of influence within the Senate. The loss underscores the fragility of political transitions and the human toll behind public office, as the National Assembly prepares to honor one of its members while continuing its legislative agenda.
