The Students Union Government of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai has confirmed the death of Kelvin Danlami, a 300 level Computer Science student whose passing has shaken the campus community and renewed concern about the rising dangers of gambling among young people.
In a statement signed by the SUG General Secretary, Comrade Aliyu Abubakar, the union described Kelvin as a promising student whose loss has left classmates, lecturers, friends and family devastated.
According to the union, the incident occurred on Sunday and was immediately reported to the police by the Students Union Government and the Dean of Student Affairs. His parents were contacted and his body was later released to the family for burial.
The statement noted that the entire university community is mourning, adding that Kelvin’s death is a painful reminder of the silent financial and emotional pressure that gambling can create for students. Reports within the community indicate that Kelvin had struggled after losing a large sum of money belonging to him through gambling activities.
Students and staff have continued to express their condolences and reflect on how illicit gambling continues to infiltrate campuses, leaving many young people overwhelmed by debt, shame and stress.
While investigations and internal reviews are ongoing, the union encouraged students to seek support when facing financial or personal pressure, and called for stronger awareness campaigns to protect young people from predatory gambling platforms.
Kelvin’s passing remains a deep loss to all who knew him.
