Anambra Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of Pregnant Nurse in Ogbunike

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26 year old man in connection with the killing of a pregnant nurse whose mutilated body was discovered in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of the state. Authorities say the suspect was tracked down and apprehended as part of an ongoing investigation into the killing, which has drawn widespread outrage.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga identified the suspect as Chibunna Nwafor, also known as Offonwadile. He was arrested at his hideout in the Umueri community. According to the command, he has since been transferred to a higher investigative formation for what officials described as discreet and comprehensive investigative proceedings.

The killing of the pregnant nurse has sparked concern across Anambra State, particularly in Oyi Local Government Area, where residents have demanded swift justice. Cases involving the murder and mutilation of victims have heightened public anxiety in parts of southeastern Nigeria in recent years, prompting increased pressure on security agencies to improve response times and intelligence gathering.

Police authorities have not yet disclosed the full circumstances surrounding the victim’s death, but the brutality of the crime has intensified calls for accountability and strengthened collaboration between residents and law enforcement.

The victim’s body was found in Ogbunike, a community in Oyi Local Government Area known for its residential settlements and local commerce. News of the discovery quickly spread, prompting an immediate response from the Anambra State Police Command.

Investigators launched coordinated operations across surrounding communities, focusing on intelligence-led tracking and local informant networks. The breakthrough came with the arrest of Nwafor in Umueri, a neighboring community, where he was reportedly hiding.

Following his arrest, Nwafor was handed over to senior investigative authorities within the police structure. Officials say the move is intended to ensure a thorough and impartial probe, particularly given the gravity of the crime.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended members of the public whose cooperation and timely information aided the investigation. He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring that all individuals connected to the crime are identified and prosecuted.

Police officials have indicated that the investigation remains active and that further arrests are possible as inquiries continue.

The arrest marked a significant turning point in the case, which had initially raised fears of a prolonged manhunt. Community intelligence proved decisive, according to police sources, allowing investigators to narrow their focus and locate the suspect’s hideout.

Authorities have not released details on how the suspect was identified or whether forensic evidence played a role in the breakthrough.

Since the discovery of the victim’s body, the case has intensified scrutiny on security operations in the area. Community leaders have reportedly urged residents to remain calm while cooperating fully with investigators.

The police command has emphasized a renewed focus on intelligence gathering and collaboration with local stakeholders as part of broader crime prevention strategies across the state.

As of the latest update, the suspect remains in custody under the supervision of senior investigative authorities. Police say additional information will be released as the case progresses and as investigative procedures are completed.

The arrest represents an important step in addressing a crime that has shaken public confidence and stirred grief within the community. Authorities now face the task of building a strong prosecutorial case while maintaining transparency in the investigative process.

For residents of Anambra State, the outcome of this case will serve as a key test of the state’s capacity to respond decisively to violent crime and deliver justice for victims and their families.
