Six Feared Dead, Four Rescued After Boat Accident in Lagos Waterways

The Lagos State Waterways Authority has confirmed the loss of six lives following a boat accident that occurred around the Igbologun axis of Lagos waterways on Tuesday night.

According to the authority, the incident involved a Savvy Marine passenger boat that was travelling from Ilashe Beach House when it ran into trouble along the Nigerdock section of the Igbologun water channel. The accident happened at about 8:35 pm on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Preliminary findings indicate that the boat struck a submerged object, causing it to overturn. Four passengers were rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Sadly, six other passengers were recovered dead at the scene.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by LASWA’s Head of Public Affairs, Wuraola Alake, the agency confirmed that both LASWA and the National Inland Waterways Authority are working together to investigate the incident.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing in collaboration with the Marine Police and other emergency responders to ensure that all passengers are accounted for. Authorities have also begun a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.

LASWA extended its condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to improving safety across Lagos inland waterways.
