Blake Garrett, the actor best known for his role in the 2006 comedy How to Eat Fried Worms, has died at the age of 33. Garrett passed away in Oklahoma on Sunday, February 8, just a week after being hospitalized and diagnosed with shingles, his mother Carol confirmed.
The exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed. Garrett’s mother expressed concern that his passing may have been accidental, suggesting he might have been self-medicating following his recent illness.
Garrett, a native of Austin, Texas, gained recognition for his portrayal of Plug in How to Eat Fried Worms, alongside co-stars Luke Benward, Hallie Eisenberg, and Adam Hicks. The film’s cast won the Best Young Ensemble in a Feature Film award at the 2007 Young Artists Awards.
Before his screen career, Garrett performed in stage productions including Aladdin and his Magical Lamp, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Grease. He also toured internationally with Barney’s Colorful World from 2003 to 2004, according to Deadline. Reflecting on his early career, Garrett noted that children were often captivated by his distinctive hair color.
