The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and collected 2.5 million dollars which is about 3.56 billion naira in prize money. Nigeria defeated Egypt 4 to 2 on penalties in the bronze match in Casablanca after a goalless ninety minutes.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali delivered a standout performance, saving two penalties including an effort from Mohamed Salah. His heroics sealed Nigeria’s ninth third place finish at the tournament.
Senegal won the tournament for the second time in their history after beating hosts Morocco 1 to 0 in a tense final in Rabat. Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in extra time with a powerful strike into the top corner.
This year’s prize pool was the biggest ever. CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed that champions Senegal earned 10 million dollars which is about 14.23 billion naira, a jump from the 7 million dollars paid out in 2023. Morocco as runners up took 4 million dollars which is about 5.69 billion naira. Nigeria earned 2.5 million dollars which is about 3.56 billion naira, while Egypt in fourth place received 1.3 million dollars which is about 1.85 billion naira.
Quarter finalists went home with 800 thousand dollars each which is about 1.14 billion naira. Teams that finished third in their groups received 700 thousand dollars which is about 996 million naira and those that finished fourth collected 500 thousand dollars which is about 711 million naira.
Motsepe said the financial increase is part of a long term effort to strengthen African football and reward national teams better. Speaking in Rabat before the final, he noted that prize money was less than 5 million dollars before 2023, then went up to 7 million dollars and has now hit 10 million dollars for the winners. He also promised that CAF will keep improving the financial structure of the continent’s most important competition.
