Museveni Announces 2026 Re-election Bid After Four Decades in Power

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has officially confirmed he will run again in the 2026 presidential election, extending a leadership that has already lasted 40 years.

Museveni, who is 81 years old, first took office in 1986 after a guerrilla war that toppled the government. He has remained in power ever since, making him one of the longest serving leaders on the African continent.

His latest bid was approved by Uganda’s Electoral Commission, clearing the way for him to appear on the ballot when voters head to the polls on January 15, 2026.

Museveni entered office on a wave of optimism after leading armed rebellions against what he called oppressive regimes. That early goodwill has gradually eroded as allegations of corruption, a shrinking civic space, and an increasingly authoritarian style of governance have become recurring themes throughout his tenure.

Political analysts note that Museveni still commands strong support among voters who credit him with stability, infrastructure projects, and economic growth. His critics, including musician turned opposition figure Bobi Wine, argue that Uganda is stuck under a system defined by human rights concerns, corruption, and a lack of democratic accountability.

Most observers believe Museveni is likely to win another term. However, there is growing conversation about succession, especially surrounding his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Critics argue that Muhoozi’s rapid rise through the military and political system points to a carefully managed succession plan.

Former newspaper editor Charles Onyango Obbo said the coming election is not just about the result, but about what the political atmosphere reveals about Museveni’s future intentions. In his words, the story is less about the numbers that will eventually be announced and more about the mood on the ground.

Despite speculation about retirement, Museveni shows no sign of stepping aside. Onyango Obbo put it bluntly, saying Museveni may grow more frail with age, but remains relentless in his work and will not willingly leave office even if he eventually needs a walking stick.
