Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Presumed Innocent in N80.2BN Fraud Case, EFCC Says

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello remains innocent until proven guilty in his ongoing N80.2 billion fraud trial. The Commission emphasized that it is the courts, not the EFCC, that determine guilt or innocence.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, EFCC Director of Public Affairs Wilson Uwuajeren said Bello’s trial is progressing as witnesses and evidence continue to be presented in court. He noted that criminal prosecutions in Nigeria take time and must follow due process.

Uwuajeren stressed that the EFCC’s role is strictly to prosecute the case before the court and is not influenced by politics. He also clarified that Bello’s position within his political party is irrelevant to the legal proceedings.

“As we speak, the trial is ongoing, and the Constitution presumes anyone on trial to be innocent until proven otherwise,” Uwuajeren said. “EFCC is focused solely on enforcing the law and faithfully presenting the charges in court.”

The Commission reiterated its commitment to fairness for both the prosecution and the defense, emphasizing that the legal process is separate from any political activity and that the EFCC remains non-partisan in its approach.
